The New Testament: Why It’s Been Two Years Since My Last Entry
A year I spent spinning my wheels trying to build a coaching business. A whole year. Launching us into broke-ness, only to become a grifter.
My new husband and I were living in a camper on the lake in Vermont, and it was lovely. I had just moved back to my home state from LA, and we had reconnected about 6 months earlier.
(Sometimes. It’s the right person, wrong time!)
While we were living in the camper, I had a revelation about my career.
I was over the world of online marketing.
I had just discovered minimalism, and it opened my eyes to the consumeristic society we live in. I was no longer willing to compromise my integrity to sell dumb products that people didnt need.
Preying on their insecurities to sell them a solution.
So I up and quit. Just like that.
It had worked well for me in the past…why wouldn’t it again?
Except it didn’t, this time.
“I would become a woman’s spiritual coach!” I thought
This hasty decision led to a preliminary phase of learning how to attract clients and make money as a coach, which quickly led me down a rabbit hole of free webinars on “How to Make Millions in Low Ticket Sales as a Coach” and so on.
It was littered with conflicting advice, new strategies (each one claiming theirs was the best), and overall, led my ADHD brain on several side quests that got me nowhere.
And if you've read previous versions, then you bore witness to this.
In the meantime, my husband was shouldering the financial responsibilities, which led us to very tight times. Very tight.
By the time I finally found a winning strategy, I took a good long look at the content I was peddling and realized I didn’t align with it at all.
It felt like a money grab generated by AI under the guise of helping people attract miracles into their lives. Vom.
And that's where the last edition of Answer the Call left off back in August, 2024.
I was spinning my wheels with my offer, falling victim to every “high ticket, low ticket” coach for coaches grift under the sun, almost collapsing under the pressure to “hurry up and make money” that I got away from the simple essence of my true calling, which was to help people with my messages.
I spent a year trying to build that business to generate an income, and didn’t help a single, effin’, person.
We were so broke, I knew I needed to step away, go back into copywriting to pay the bills, take a break, re-center and then give it a go when I felt inspired, motivated, and ready.
And that's where I've been for the past two years since my last edition of Answer the Call.
I put my calling aside because I basically had lost the plot.
My product had morphed into AI snake oil that didn't feel genuine, and we were broke as a fucking joke.
So, I took a copywriting job at an agency writing TikTok scripts for GLP-1s and boner pills. Sigh.
Two years passed that I was at the agency.
I had a baby.
We were comfortable...and then all of a sudden, the agency leaders and HR got every copywriter on a video call and fired all of us, giving us the corporate canned response they were “restructuring.”
I was fired.
At first, my instinct was to panic apply to a bunch of jobs I didn’t really want.
But, of course, I received information that was downloaded into my head that told me, in a nutshell, “Nope, it’s time. You were fired to get your ass off the couch and step into your calling.”
This time, I wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice, and I was going to focus on using my gift to serve others, and discover how to monetize it along the way.
But I put serving others first, and now here I am.
And here you are! About to learn how to do the same thing, but with your own gifts, and skills, and expertise.
Maybe you’re a messenger, too!
Maybe you’re a teacher, healer, protector...that’s what you’re (hopefully) about to find out, or at least get a little direction and insight into what it is you’re actually meant to be doing.
All this is to say, this time, you're learning with me in REAL time, and I've haven't made the same mistake twice.
I've:
Gotten re-acquainted with my calling.
Defined my service.
Created a product.
Organically grown a following on Threads of 8K sharing my advice about finding your calling.
Investing in just 2 tools, so I have almost no overhead.
Started a Pinterest marketing strategy that's working.
Made actual sales.
Actually helped people.
